Tourist clothing
When tourists travel to Gambia they are advised to bring modest dress wear and a thin wolly jumper for in the hotels and resorts. In all public places everybody should wear something such as a syrong that covers you from your knees upwards also it must cover your arms up to your elbows this shows respect. In resorts and hotels bikinis are aloud however it is unacseptable in anywhere else, as Gambia is a muslim country.
Traditional ClothingNormally, clothes in Gambia include long flowing items , for women these clothes often go down to the ankles and up to the wrists.Also women should cover their heads. Traditional clothes are bright and colourful however buisness women will wear a westen style clothing with an african flare.
Men stay in line with the muslim faith and wear an item called the Kaftan, it is a full dress ( ankle length and up to the wrists) it is ofen embroded with gold coloured thread. On the top of mens heads they are told to wear a small skull cap which is also embroydered with golden thread. |
Hair
In Gambia there are many different and inique styles of hair, some traditional ones include : jerreh, bally and bertie. Most of the time women have beads braided into their hair. Often people have hair extensions put into their hair to make it longer , in Gmabia hair extensions are sold in cosmetic shops and tailors shops similiar to England.
